About Us

As a charity, we promote everyday actions that lift mental wellbeing, provide tools that support people through tough times, and advocate for a better mental health system and society

Since 1977, we have been the nation’s trusted, independent voice for better mental health.

Our kaupapa

We promote simple, proven actions that people can practise every day - like those in the Five Ways to Wellbeing, or Te Whare Tapa Whā. Our national mental wellbeing campaigns, resources, and partnerships show people how to care for their wellbeing, find balance and feel their best.

We provide free, evidence-based information and resources to help people who are facing mental health challenges and suicidal thoughts to find hope and a way forward. We also empower communities to support one another after a suicide.

We speak up boldly and independently for change in our mental health system because everyone deserves to get the support they need, when they need it. We help government and policy makers understand what really drives mental health challenges, and what needs to change so more people can enjoy good mental wellbeing.

Our approach

  •     We develop programmes, campaigns and resources that help whole communities, whānau, schools and workplaces – not just individuals.
  • Our mahi is informed by clinical and academic evidence and draws on te ao Māori perspectives and the wisdom of people with mental health challenges to ensure it makes a meaningful difference.
  • We are dedicated to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • We partner and collaborate in a wide range of innovative mental health and wellbeing programmes in schools, workplaces and other settings.

Our history

“It is difficult to appreciate now just how very difficult it was to sell mental health in those days.” Professor Basil James, Chair of the Mental Health Foundation’s board - 1976-1980,

The Mental Health Foundation was incorporated as a charitable trust in 1974, but our work wasn’t brought to life until the proceeds of a telethon funded it in 1977.

Over the past 50 years we have helped transform how New Zealanders view, talk and respond to mental health and wellbeing, ensuring more people feel seen, supported and accepted.
