How to look after ourselves in uncertain times

Right now, even a little pause, a kind word, or a moment of connection can lighten the load. These small actions can help things feel a bit more manageable.

Lately, some days are feeling... a bit much. The price of things going up. Uncertainty about global events. Not quite knowing what’s coming next.

But you don’t have to have it all figured out.

Sorting out finances can take time. There is often no quick fix. Plans can take a while to come together, and things can shift along the way.

Right now, even a little pause, a kind word, or a moment of connection can lighten the load. These small actions can help things feel a bit more manageable.

Focus on something simple, here and now

Stress doesn’t just sit in one place. It can affect your sleep, your energy, your mood, and how you connect with the people around you. You might notice yourself feeling more tired or more irritable than usual or find it harder to concentrate or make decisions. These are all common responses to ongoing stress and worry.

The good news is that simple, inexpensive (or completely free) things can make a massive difference to how you feel. Things like spending time with friends or loved ones. Going for a walk. Sitting outside for a bit of fresh air. Sharing yummy kai with whānau. Making a cup of tea. Playing a game. These moments might seem small, but they can help you reset and feel more grounded.

Giving yourself permission to take breaks is important, too. Even a short pause during the day can help your mind and body recharge.

Sleep is another big one. When you are worried, it can be harder to switch off. Keeping a simple routine, like going to bed at a similar time each night or winding down without screens, can help your body settle.

Remember, it’s okay to feel all sorts

Right now, most of us will experience all sorts of reactions and feelings – and that’s okay.

Holding many different feelings when the world seems heavy is hard – but it’s also totally common and normal. It’s how we process and cope with difficult stuff. Even in the ups and downs, there’s mana and strength in how we respond and carry on.
