Our report as part of the Nōku te Ao programme, ‘Me Haere Ngātahi Tātou | Shared Journeys – Voices of the Lived Experience Community’, is here!
Nōku te Ao is a nationwide programme that aims to increase social inclusion and end discrimination towards people with experience of mental distress. Our mission is to create a more inclusive Aotearoa where people with lived experience are respected, included, valued, and treated with dignity.
Being lived experience-led is a core value of the Nōku te Ao programme, which is why we travelled across the motu in 2022 and 2023 to hear the whakaaro (thoughts) of lived experience communities. These shared insights were the foundation of our report, and offered solutions on how to end mental distress prejudice and discrimination for good. The report includes eight key recommendations, which serve as calls to action to end mental distress prejudice and discrimination.
These recommendations have come directly from people with lived experience and will both shape, and serve as a guiding compass for the Nōku te Ao Social Movement's mahi in the years to come. We all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. Nōku te Ao reminds us that mental distress does not define us, and that we should all feel supported to take our place in the world.
