There's something truly special about lacing up your sneakers, joining thousands of others, and hitting the pavement for Round the Bays. It's more than just a fun run; it's a vibrant celebration of community, movement, and the stunning beauty of our coastline.
It is also a fantastic way to supercharge your mental wellbeing. Here are six tips to make the most of it, inspired by the Five Ways to Wellbeing.
1. Connect, me whakawhanaunga: Gather your crew
Whether you’re walking, jogging, or running, sharing the Round the Bays experience with friends, family, or workmates strengthens your bonds and creates lasting memories. Connecting with others boosts your sense of belonging and self-worth. Plus, a bit of friendly banter along the course helps get you closer to the finish line.
2. Be active, me kori tonu: Move your body, lift your spirit
This one’s a no-brainer. Physical activity is a cornerstone of good mental health. In fact, research has found doing at least two and a half hours of moderate to vigorous exercise each week boosts your mental wellbeing by over 50%. [1] Round the Bays is a fantastic opportunity to get moving, regardless of your fitness level. The fresh air, the rhythm of your steps, and the collective energy of thousands moving together create an invigorating experience that revitalises both your body and mind.
3. Take notice, me aro tonu - Soak in the scenery
Aotearoa New Zealand is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, and the three Round the Bays courses showcase some of our most beautiful coastal views. As you participate, take a moment to truly notice your surroundings. Feel the sun on your skin, listen to the sounds of the ocean and the cheering crowds, and appreciate the vibrant colours of the day. Practising mindfulness by focusing on the present moment can reduce rumination and worry, enhancing your overall sense of peace and gratitude.
4. Keep learning, me ako tonu – Discover your inner athlete
If you’re new to running, discovering new training techniques, or learning about proper nutrition to fuel your body, can be a great learning opportunity. Every step of preparation offers opportunities for growth and self-discovery. This sense of achievement and expanding your capabilities can significantly boost your confidence and mental resilience.
5. Give, tukua – Contribute to something bigger
Whether it’s fundraising for a charity or simply cheering on fellow participants, acts of giving and altruism are profoundly rewarding. They foster a sense of purpose, gratitude, and connection to the wider community, which are all vital ingredients for mental wellbeing. Knowing your efforts are making a difference can be incredibly uplifting.
Why mental health matters
Almost half of us (47%) will experience mental distress or illness during our lifetime. But it can be hard to talk about.
The money raised during the Round the Bays Series will help the Mental Health Foundation create and share resources and information that can give people the words that can be hard to find – words that can lead to hope and healing.
The path to the finish line is a journey to a healthier you. The funds you raise are a path to hope for all of us. See you at the start line!
