We all have mental health, just like we all have physical health — and we all need to look after it. Everyone’s levels of mental health and wellbeing vary over time.

Most people need mental health support at some point in their lives, either in a temporary or ongoing way. It's important that people managers are inclusive and supportive of staff experiencing mental distress or illness — both for the person experiencing distress, and for the benefit of their workplace.

Nearly half of all New Zealanders will experience mental distress or illness at some point in their lives.

Benefits for workplaces and staff

As an employer, people leader, HR or H&S professional, you’ll know it's your people who provide your greatest potential for business success.

Creating a respectful workplace environment where it’s okay to talk about mental health, where staff who are in distress or going through a tough time are supported, and where bullying can’t thrive has huge benefits for both your staff and your workplace.

Good employee mental health leads to better engagement, reduced absenteeism and higher productivity, while improving people’s wellbeing, morale and job satisfaction.

Building safe, strong and supportive workplaces

Our resources and guidance take a whole-person approach to workplace mental wellbeing. They help workplaces to build safe, strong and supportive environments and cultures by:

  • Providing the skills and knowledge to create safe, positive work environments
  • Having strong systems in place to support people through tough times
  • Supporting staff to manage their mental wellbeing.

"For every dollar a small business owner invests in company-wide wellbeing initiatives for their staff, they can expect to see a return of up to 12x within a year." Xero and the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER), 2021
