Chris Black

Chris works predominantly with values-based and purpose driven organisations who have the betterment of New Zealand at their core.

Chris brings more than 25 years’ governance and senior executive experience to the Mental Health Foundation board. He is currently chair of the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, Rabobank NZ and Southern Cross Medical Care Society.  He is also a trustee of Southern Cross Health Trust and a director of Southern Cross Healthcare and was previously president of the Insurance Council of New Zealand.

In 2021 he stepped down as CEO of rural-based insurer FMG. In his time at FMG, Chris was heavily involved in the establishment and governance of Farmstrong, a programme the Mental Health Foundation helped design to help improve the wellbeing of rural communities in New Zealand. As a result, he has a particular interest in empirically based ‘up-stream’ initiatives that can help enhance the wellbeing of New Zealanders. He believes this needs to be complemented by more easily accessible ‘downstream’ information and wrap-around support mechanisms for those that need them.
