With more than 15 years’ operating at the board-executive interface, Api brings extensive experience in statutory decision-making, organisational assurance, and governance across complex public sector systems.
Recognised for his integrity, Api provides strong strategic leadership, robust risk and performance oversight and a focus on long-term sustainability. He brings a Pacific and Te Tiriti-grounded perspective, supporting organisations to uphold equity, strengthen accountability and improve mental health and wellbeing outcomes for communities.
Api has held senior governance and executive roles in Health New Zealand, WorkSafe, District Health Boards and the Health Promotion Agency. Of Samoan heritage from the villages of Fagali’i and Solosolo, he brings a values-based leadership style influenced by his experience in public policy, strategy, health promotion and injury prevention. He holds an Executive Master of Business Administration. Api will commence his role on The Mental Health Foundation Board in September 2026.
