Auckland Marathon runners raise over $32,000 for mental health
On Sunday 1 November, 196 amazing people laced up their shoes and ran or walked the Auckland Marathon to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation. Our team were there to cheer on their efforts, along with their proud friends and whānau.
Collectively, our fundraisers raised more than $32,000 to support the Mental Health Foundation and our important mahi. For some, it was a way to honour their loved ones. For others, it was a chance to celebrate their own mental health journeys.
Maria ran in memory of a friend: "Around four years ago, I lost a friend to suicide. I can say on behalf of me and my friends that it was a really tough time. It really showed us that mental health isn't something that should be taken lightly. I'm so thankful to be part of this cause, and to do it for my friend Jack, and for anyone else who might be struggling."
When we asked our fundraisers what advice they had for others who might be keen to run for a cause, they had words of encouragement.
“Just get into it. Share your story with your friends. Because if you're passionate about it, they'll get behind you. Fundraising doesn't require a lot of work, but it's hugely rewarding.”
“I think it's the best way to start your running journey. It gives you another motivation that's bigger than yourself.”
We're so grateful to all of our Auckland Marathon fundraisers – you are an inspiration! A huge ngā mihi from the whole team at the Mental Health Foundation.
There's still time to show your support for their incredible efforts. With your help, we can uplift the mental health of everyone in Aotearoa and help to ensure that no-one faces tough times alone.
